Green Practices
Arun Control Systems is operating in a high technology sector of industry but is very aware of green issues and our responsibilities. We therefore run our day to day operations considering the environmental impact of our business activities.
Like many aware companies today, we adhere to certain green principles to "do our bit" for the environment.
For instance, in the office;
PAPER & CARD
We attempt to recycle 100% of our waste paper and card.
Where appropriate, we print on both sides of a sheet of paper.
We deter suppliers from sending us unnecessary mailshots, catalogues, etc. and do not ourselves use these methods of advertising.
E-MAIL, INTERNET, TELEPHONE & FAXING
We conduct as much business, as is practicable, electronically. This includes e-mailing data and documents instead of sending printed matter by post and video conferencing where preferable to routine meetings involving traveling.
TRAVELLING
Much of our business involves work at our clients sites. However, we attempt to minimise the amount of traveling to that essential to our operation.
ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Electrical devices not used are switched off. It's very simple but extremely effective!
All new office equipment purchased must be low energy consumers such as TFT screens instead of the CRT screens.
OLD EQUIPMENT
We may want to run all low energy devices, but where old equipment is still in good working order, it makes no sense to replace it with a low energy device just for the sake of it. There is a huge environmental overhead in replacing old for new.
The issue of scrapping equipment has to be carefully considered. Arun Control Systems is careful to ensure a sensible disposal of all old equipment which includes recycling and passing on to others who may still get use from it.
CARBON OFFSETTING
Arun Control Systems attempts to offset its carbon footprint by contributing to some of the organised schemes that perform carbon offsetting. This has been initially applied to travel (cars and flights) but may be extended to consider the total office footprint - however, due to recent adverse publicity into these schemes, we will be reviewing our ongoing participation.
Green Comment
This is not a political statement and Arun Control Systems Ltd. has no association with any of the environmental organisations or parties. This is merely the personal view of Steve Harris, Director.
Few people will argue that industrialisation has levied a heavy toll on the ecology and the environment across the globe. The demands of people in every corner of the planet, for improved services and material goods continuously force an increase in construction, manufacturing and their by-products.
It is unrealistic to expect humanity to take a step back and drop all the advantages of the modern world.
I believe the solution to increasing output and reducing ecological damage is to continue along the high technology route, enhancing the techniques already employed to be ever more efficient and in developing exciting new techniques.
I am proud to be involved in projects that improve the efficiency of manufacturing plant. Reduction in energy consumption, heat loss, scrap product and chemical waste are good for both the plants profits and the environment.
Whether the sceptical amongst you believe that financial savings are the motivation for business to become more efficient or whether the ecology is a considered factor, there is no conflict here. The better the manufacturing techniques, the more efficient they become.
Investment in control technology makes good financial, strategic and environmental sense.
