Arun Control Systems was invited to create a SCADA system to act as an operator interface panel in a control room, overseeing 108 discrete temperature controllers at a development and manufacturing plant in Teesside.
The controllers were made by West and communicated using Modbus protocol on an RS485 link.
The SCADA chosen was a Wizcon V7.2 running on a Dell Optiplex PC, under Windows NT. The screen was a high resolution Philips 20” Touch screen monitor.
Arun Control Systems supplied the engineering development, documentation, software licences and all PC associated hardware.
Apart from creating a system that displayed the data from the temperature controllers on mimics of the plant itself, the system also provided trends/charts, alarms – graded and sorted according to priority criteria – and recipes that allowed operators to simply set up the control parameters necessary to run different products on the line.
The image design was considerate of the fact that the operator was using a touch screen.
Arun Control Systems worked closely with the engineering company responsible for building and installing the control panels and liased with West with regard the communications of their controllers.
The instruments were housed in four enclosures, distributed about the plant (enclosure 1 = 21 instruments, enclosure 2 = 30, enclosure 3 = 30 & enclosure 4 = 27) and were linked by RS485 cables directly to a 4 port card installed in the PC.
